Lumshory Tanks – Spa in the Carpathians

The small village of Lumshory in the Perechyn district of the Zakarpattia region attracts travellers from different regions of Ukraine, European countries and other parts of the world. And they travel here first of all to try the ancient and unusual local tradition of rest, recovery and rejuvenation of the body. Of course, we are talking about the famous Lumshory tubs, bathing in which will give everyone a very interesting experience.

Sometimes tourists joke that this is a real “rehearsal of hell”, although, at the same time, Lumshory gained the fame of “Transcarpathian paradise” among travellers. Such contrasts in the names are common here because the bathing procedure itself suggests contradiction: hot water inside the tub and icy water in the river nearby, and you will have to dive in both if you want to feel the full palette and depth of this experience. The villagers really know their job, which consists in, so to speak, “cooking tourists in vats”; they do it with love and inexhaustible Transcarpathian hospitality – when you arrive l it seems that the owner of the country house had spent the whole day waiting for you, and just for you!

We know from the locals that they originally bathed in wooden barrels. The water in them was heated by a hot stone, which was thrown into the barrel from the hearth. And only later did large cast-iron vats appear, and it was much more convenient to heat water and bathe in them. The ancient vats in Lumshory have served their residents and guests well, and some of them are still used. For example, the oldest of those still in use today dates back to 1600! The inscription on this vat serves as the evidence of this fact.

This ancient way of rest and recovery, although interrupted by two world wars, still did not disappear, but very successfully recovered in Lumshory, and later vats in the Carpathians became popular throughout the region. Being a very tiny mountain village (its population is less than a hundred people), Lumshory in Transcarpathia turned into an area where everyone goes for bathing in tanks.

  2. Add to the water fragrant Carpathian herbs and flowers to taste  (numbers 1 and 2 of the list are provided by the organizers).
  3. Remove the upper layers of clothing from the body and warm it up.
  4. Carefully put yourself into the tank with heated water.
  5. Relax and “boil” in a tub over low or medium heat for 10-15 minutes, then put your body into the icy water of the river Turychka (located right near the baths).
  6. Do not forget to throw firewood in the fire to keep it burning! (This will be taken care of for you too).
  7. Repeat step five until your body is fully cooked (it should taste like a feeling of complete bliss).
